Scandium

Material information

Scandium is a soft, light metal that could serve aerospace industry. However, scandium is too expensive for widespread use. Applications for scandium were not developed until the 1970s, when the positive effects of scandium on aluminium alloys were discovered, and its use in such alloys remains its only major application. Alloys of scandium and aluminium are used in some kinds of athletic equipment, such as aluminium baseball bats, bicycle frames and lacrosse sticks. It is expected that scandium-aluminium alloys will also be important in the manufacture of fuel cells.
